Art Notes by Khephra Husser (She Works A Lot)
No amount of gossip or hate can force me to feel ashamed of my choice to earn a degree in Civic Engagement and a degree in Studio Art. We desperately need more creative professionals, and there aren’t enough being encouraged to utilize their skillset. Our communities, especially, need neurodiverse teams of problem solvers.
Every few years, when I’m locked into my calling and purpose—juggling work, education, and multiple projects—there seems to be a gathering of people with limited understanding of what I do. They tell me that I’m not working hard enough or not doing anything at all. The irony? They never bother to ask me what I’m actually doing. Instead, they bypass the truth and leap to conclusions.
But you know what? This sparked an opportunity for me to convert their ignorance into something profitable. There are countless individuals, just like me, who juggle a 9-5, pursue further education, and build multiple streams of income within their skillset. And they, too, deal with abrasive support systems that try to talk them out of success and stability because it doesn’t fit into their box of overwork, burnout, and poor health.
I began optimizing my process and creating resources to help others on the path to becoming creative professionals and monetizing their talents. Now, whenever people run their mouths about what I’m not doing, I see it as more fuel to expand my income streams, because I’ve realized there’s a whole community out there that needs the guidance and encouragement I can offer. For those actually willing to learn, I hope this helps you better understand my work as an artist.
What is Studio Art?
Studio Art encompasses the creation of art through various media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, and more. It’s the backbone of any fine artist’s craft and allows for expression and innovation in visual formats.
What is Civic Engagement?
Civic Engagement is about using your skills and knowledge to address community issues and create solutions. In my case, it’s about merging my creative talents with real-world problem-solving, connecting people through art, and fostering positive community impact.

I hope that by sharing my journey, others are encouraged to embrace their own paths boldly, regardless of misunderstanding or criticism.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about what drives me forward. May my experiences serve as encouragement to those navigating similar challenges, and may we all continue to uplift one another in the work we’re called to do.
With purpose,
