Intaglio vs Relief: A Guide to Printmaking Techniques

Printmaking is a process of creating multiple copies of an image from a master. There are two main types of printmaking techniques: intaglio and relief.

Intaglio

Intaglio printmaking techniques involve incising lines or areas into a surface, such as a metal plate, and then inking and printing the raised areas. The ink is held in the incisions, and when the plate is pressed against paper, the ink is transferred to the paper, creating a print.

Some of the most common intaglio printmaking techniques include:

  • Engraving: Lines are cut into the plate with a sharp tool.

  • Etching: Lines are created by using acid to eat away at the plate.

  • Drypoint: Lines are scratched into the plate with a sharp tool, creating burrs that hold the ink.

  • Mezzotint: A textured surface is created on the plate by scraping away the metal, and then the plate is inked and printed.

Relief

Relief printmaking techniques involve carving away areas of a surface, such as a woodblock, leaving the raised areas to be inked and printed. The ink is applied to the raised areas, and when the block is pressed against paper, the ink is transferred to the paper, creating a print.

Some of the most common relief printmaking techniques include:

  • Woodcut: A design is carved into a block of wood, and then the block is inked and printed.

  • Linoleum cut: A design is carved into a block of linoleum, and then the block is inked and printed.

  • Wood engraving: A design is engraved into a block of wood with a sharp tool, and then the block is inked and printed.

Which Technique is Right for You?

The best printmaking technique for you will depend on your personal preferences and the type of image you want to create. Intaglio techniques are good for creating detailed images with fine lines, while relief techniques are good for creating bold, graphic images.

If you are new to printmaking, I recommend trying both intaglio and relief techniques to see which one you prefer. There are many resources available to help you learn more about printmaking, including books, websites, and classes.

Here are some additional tips for choosing the right printmaking technique:

  • Consider the size of the image you want to create. Intaglio techniques are better suited for smaller images, while relief techniques can be used to create larger images.

  • Think about the level of detail you want to achieve. Intaglio techniques are better for creating detailed images, while relief techniques are better for creating bold, graphic images.

  • Consider the materials you have available. Intaglio techniques require metal plates, while relief techniques can be done with wood, linoleum, or other materials.

With a little experimentation, you will be able to find the printmaking technique that is right for you.
